SWE job growth declined for the first time since 2000

The SWE market has had tremendous growth. Though it seems now is the first time in two decades we’re seeing shrinkage in the number of job openings.

Gergely Orosz wrote a wonderful, in-depth article on the state of the SWE job market. Learn about the top companies hiring in the current market. Hint its the worlds largest eCommerce website. No surprise there. Go give the article a read.

Is Tech ageist? 1200 jobs later and no offer for one guy

One guy applied to 1,200 jobs and still had trouble finding a job. He did everything right. He applied early, applied often, and applied to targeted jobs where he fit the job description. He even wrote a targeted resume for each job. Man is that not enough? Nope. The big elephant in the room was that he was 43.

Though nobody said it, I suspect his age is the real reason for no callbacks. Employers are odd. After a certain age employers don’t like older candidates yet they are always asking younger candidates for experiences they don’t have. Tech is no different.

In startup land, after 40 you’re considered old. You’re def won’t be getting a callback from that hot YC company full of 20 somethings in a friends apartment while they hack on “changing the world.” If you wanted that, you’d get hit with not a culture fit. Lol

Once you are deemed too old, job searches get a lot harder. You’ll need to rely on your network of other older folk. Therefore make sure you’re building relationship with your peers in the industry because when the time comes, we are all in this together.

Rejected after accepted, now ain’t that’s some sh*t,

One Redditor told the story of how he was rejected by a recruiter, AFTER the CTO already extended a verbal offer. What!? Apparently the redditor had been in long talks with the CTO about joining the company when OP forgot to formally apply.

In less than 24hrs after he applied, the company recruiter rejected him. The crazy part is it wasn’t an automated rejection. His application was viewed and tossed aside. Even the CTO was shocked and made sure to connect with HR to fix the mistake in the process.

The moral of the story here is it’s not you, false negatives are extremely common in Tech. If you get a rejection, don’t waiver. Keep applying. You’ll find something.
