Jobs Report: 08/21/24

New grads rejoice your time is now; Interns too!

Hey friend! Back with your weekly software engineer jobs report. If you just want the spreadsheet, click the button at the end of the post.

Today’s issue is a special one. It’s all about the new grads (and interns)! Seems like August is the month when all the university roles are posted. There some interesting takeaways from this weeks jobs so let’s dive

New Grads (and interns): Your time is now

Seems like August is prime time to apply to companies as an upcoming graduate. Multiple companies have posted their new graduate roles for students who graduate by June 2025. The same goes for internship roles.

The downside is that with the current job market you’ll have fierce competition from other students. These job posts gets hundreds of applications within the first few hours before recruiting hides the job post to screen resumes. Don’t let that discourage you though, just apply, apply, apply until you get that call back.

Once interesting takeaway is the lead time it takes to get a job. With these roles posted now, you can guess that its going to take at least 8-12 months before you get a job with minimal industry experience. If you’re starting to look for a job in January forget about it, you’ve lost to the kids that start applying now. So start searching now, and always be searching.

Even as an experience software engineer I noticed my own leads times are around 4-6 months. I’ve had shorter times if I knew the Founder or VP/Director of Engineering and we had been having causal conversations over many months — it pays to be networking constantly in this regard.

Low Baller of the week

Our low baller of the week goes to nobody! The salaries seem to be within the market range. Very nice.

Big Baller of the week

Figma is once again the top salary of the week with 350k for a software engineer role. But these new grad position are equally as competitive. One company has a max base salary of 280k.

That’s an insane amount of money to be earning right out of school. Thought I wouldn’t be surprised if the top end of the salary band was reserved for graduate students of MS and PhD programs.

One trading company is paying $4800 per week for interns. 4800 per week!? Lol now that is some REAL dough to be collecting has an intern.
